About the Breed Black Copper Marans are magnificent, hardy birds. They sport beautiful, iridescent black plumage with striking copper hackles and lightly feathered legs. They are excellent foragers, dual-purpose birds, and generally have a calm, confident temperament that makes them a joy to have around the yard.

What You're Getting

• Day-Old & Ready for Transit: Hatched right here at Slightly Savage Homestead! Your chicks are packed and shipped the exact same day they come out of our incubators. Nature is amazing—chicks absorb their yolk sac just before hatching, which provides them with all the essential nutrients they need to safely survive their first few days of life without needing to eat or drink during transit.

• Dark Egg Genetics: These chicks are bred from our carefully selected flock. While we reserve our absolute darkest eggs for the incubators, your chicks carry the genetics of our beautiful, deep brown, speckled egg layers.

• Straight Run: Our chicks are sold "straight run" (unsexed). This means they are hatched and sold exactly as nature intended, so there is an equal chance of receiving pullets (females) or cockerels (males).

Shipping & Live Arrival Guarantee The health and safety of our birds is our top priority. To ensure your babies spend as little time in transit as possible, we exclusively ship via Priority Express to guarantee live arrival. We pack our day-old chicks securely, including heating pads in cold weather to keep them warm for their journey.

• Live Arrival Policy: We stand behind our shipments. In the rare and unfortunate event of transit loss, all claims for deceased chicks must be made within 12 hours of delivery. Please contact us immediately with clear photos so we can address the issue.

• Home Care: Please have your brooder set up, warmed to 95°F, and ready with chick starter and fresh water before your babies arrive at the post office. Once the chicks are safely in your care, we cannot guarantee their continued health, but we are always happy to answer questions to help you get off on the right foot!

• Order Minimums & Shipping Rules: In compliance with New York State agricultural regulations, all chick orders must contain a minimum of 6 birds. This is strictly for the health and safety of the animals. You may mix and match different breeds to meet this minimum. No exceptions will be made to this policy, including for local pickup. *
• Species Compatibility: Please note that while turkey poults can be shipped together with chicks, all quail chicks must be shipped in a separate order.
